Your rights

A lot of people talk about 'rights', but do you know what they are?

What are rights?

Everyone has rights, like the right to food and the right to life. They protect you and make sure you get treated fairly.

The United Nations has a list of rights that everyone on the planet should know about, called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

There is also a special set of rights for children and young people called the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). It applies to everyone under 18 and has been signed by every country in the world - except for the USA and Somalia.

There are 54 rights in the UNCRC, including:

  • the right to say what you think and to be listened to.
  • the right to get information.
  • the right to play and free time.
  • the right to meet with others and join or set up clubs.

These rights give you the freedom to get involved and have your say.
